Midnight movies this weekend at the Clay and the Chabot

Cross the bridge or go to Castro Valley for cult movie heaven this weekend

I love midnight movies and there's a whole bunch of good ones this weekend at the Clay Theatre in San Francisco and the Chabot Cinema in Castro Valley. Check it out:

At the Clay: Friday, August 29 at midnight: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
Adapted from John Cameron Mitchell's critically acclaimed off-Broadway rock theatre hit, this dazzling film tells the story of Hedwig, an "internationally ignored" rock and roll songstress hailing from Communist East Germany. Born a boy named Hansel, whose life dream is to find his other half, he submits to a sex change operation in order to marry an American GI and get over the Wall to freedom. The operation is botched, leaving her with the aforementioned 'angry inch.' Through a collage of songs, flashbacks and animation, a bitter yet witty Hedwig tells her life story...

Saturday August 30 at midnight: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
The longest-running midnight movie of all time stars Tim Curry as the kinky yet endearing “transsexual from Transylvania” Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as his hapless guests Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding rough trade and author Richard O’Brien as the hunchbacked butler Riff Raff. It’s harmless musical fun—a delightful spoof of Hollywood horror movies and Old Dark House melodramas. All of our engagements feature live casts who perform scenes during the movie, and the audience is always welcome to respond to the on-screen action. The Rocky Horror Picture was the first—and is still the best—interactive movie experience!

Saturday August 31 at midnight: SING-ALONG GREASE
With the words to the songs appearing on screen, now you can sing along with high school sweethearts Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) while watching this beloved, '50s-style rock 'n' roll musical comedy based on the nostalgic Broadway hit. You know you want to! Audience participation encouraged! Co-starring Stockard Channing, Eve Arden and Frankie Avalon. Directed by Randall Kleiser (The Blue Lagoon).

Meanwhile, the cozy Chabot Cinema in Castro Valley is showing FIGHT CLUB this weekend at midnight on Friday and Saturday. I'm really impressed with the lineup of midnight movies these guys have been booking. Last week they had John Carpenter's unbelievably campy classic THEY LIVE!
